Van der Rohe once described his architectural designs as “skin-and-bones” due to their minimalism, definition of space, rigidity of structure and transparency.

Much has been said about the renowned Bauhaus School and its immense impact on both designers and design. There are two other schools worthy of highlighting – both with an incredible history and a list of celebrated and illustrious alumni: Cranbrook College in Michigan and the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen.

The title Royal Designer for Industry has been held by a number of Designer Chair Warehouse favourites, including Walter Gropius, Charles Eames, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen, George Nelson, Antonio Citterio, Sori Yanagi and Konstantin Grcic.

The field of furniture design has always appealed to those architects who possess a preoccupation with details: the beauty of a well-considered threshold, the point at which glass meets window frame, or carefully crafted door handle.

The perfect chair, the art chosen for a wall or an elegantly placed table can surreptitiously reveal important clues about a character or set the tone for the atmosphere in a scene.

Of all his designs, Wegner declared the Round Chair as his greatest achievement, “not because of its export success, but because I have been more thorough with it than anything else”.

The CH24, a.k.a. Wishbone Chair, turned out to be the most commercially successful of the more than 500 chairs that Wegner designed in his lifetime. Sometimes referred to as a supermodel chair, for the number of interior design magazine covers it has graced, no work on chairs would be complete without some mention of it.

Over recent years, there seems to be more of an interest in how the practice of design has worked. The how is less about structure and techniques and more about the stories and the relationships that followed the journeys of iconic creations. What has emerged from this is a celebration of collaborations, without which, the design world as we know it would appear quite different.
